Knee Revision Joint Replacement

Home>>Knee Revision Joint Replacement

The knee joint is considered as the largest joint in the human body. The knee joint joins the thigh with the leg. The knee is very complicated, it is divided into two portions that is, one between the femur and tibia, and one between the femur and patella (knee cap). The knee is compound, it functions with joints immersed in synovial fluid-this acts as a lubricant inside the knee.
Revision Knee Replacement is the substitution of the previous failed total knee prosthesis with a new prosthesis. It is a complex procedure that requires wide-ranging meticulous plan, specialized cutting edge implants and tools, extended operating times, and mastery of difficult surgical techniques to achieve a good result.

The cause for revision of knee replacement:

  • Pain is the primary reason for revision. Usually the cause is clear but not always. Those knees without an obvious cause for pain, in general, do not do as well after surgery.
  • Plastic (polyethylene) wear .This is one of the easier revisions where only the plastic insert is changed.
  • Instability which means the knee is not stable and may be giving way or not feel safe when you walk.
  • Loosening of either the femoral, tibial or patella component. This usually presents as pain but may be asymptomatic. It is for this reason why you must have your joint followed up for life as there can be changes on X-ray that indicate that the knee should be revised despite having any symptoms.
  • Infection-usually presents as pain but may present as swelling or an acute fever.
  • Osteolysis (bone loss). This can occur due to particles being released into the knee joint which result in bone being destroyed.
  • Stiffness-this is difficult to improve with revision but can be helped with the right indications.

Aftercare following knee revision surgery is essentially the same as for knee replacement, consisting of a combination of physical therapy, rehabilitation exercises, pain medication when necessary, and a period of home health care or assistance. The length of recovery after revision knee surgery varies in comparison to the patient's first knee replacement. Some patients take longer to recover from revision surgery; Dr.Mohan helps the patient to have rapid recovery and less discomfort.
Dr. Mohan one of the veterans among orthopedic doctors is here to cure any kind revision replacement procedure.
