Shoulder Joint Replacement

Home>>Shoulder Joint Replacement

Shoulder joint replacement surgery is a big relief for serious arthritis of joint shoulder. Total shoulder joint replacement removes the damaged bone from the shoulder and replaces with artificial plastic or metal cartilage.
The shoulder joint is ball - and - socket joints. When the surgery is performed, the ball is removed from the top of the arm bone and socket is within the shoulder blade. This process results much more flexible motion than the previous stage.

Shoulder Joint Replacement

The main symptoms of arthritis of shoulder:

  • Pain with activities
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Hardness of the shoulder
  • Swelling of the joint
  • Tenderness around the joint

Patients who have underwent treatments for shoulder arthritis, but have not been able to find adequate relief, may be a candidate for shoulder replacement surgery. Patients allowing for the procedure should know the possible risks of surgery, and understand that the objective of joint replacement is to lessen pain. Patients usually find better motion after surgery, but these improvements are not as reliable as the pain relief following shoulder replacement surgery.
Try to get up and walk around as much as possible. Use your hand to eat, write or use a keyboard as soon as you feel comfortable unless you were told to remain in a sling and not do exercises. See Conservative rehabilitation plan above.
Expect to be in hospital at least 3 days and in a sling for 6 weeks. You may use your hand for eating soon after surgery. Most normal activities around the house can start about 12 weeks after surgery.
A successful outcome to your total shoulder joint replacement depends heavily on the meticulous performance of your exercises. Through this structured exercise program, your muscles will be methodically and progressively stretched and strengthened over one year's time. The desired effect is the optimal function of your new total shoulder replacement.
Joint replacement is one of the specializations of Dr. Mohan, orthopedic surgeon. It can be completed successfully without any pain and a quicker recovery period.
